INFO

Costessey Music In The Community (COSMIC) is a brand new organisation set up to provide the community of Old, New and West Costessey (and our neighbours) with a series of ongoing and short term musical projects. These projects will range in genre, and musical discipline for both singers and instrumentalists. The values at the heart of the organisation are:

  • Community togetherness
  • Accessible and affordable music making
  • Fun and friends

About the organiser:

Former Costessey High School student Felicity "Flick" Griffin graduated from The University Of Winchester in 2011 with a BA (Hons) in Performing Arts and Event Management. Whilst at the university she developed her skills in musical direction, conducting and accompanying. Over the past five years she has been involved in the direction of several choirs and instrumental groups, which led to taking the role of Assistant Musical Director for the university's music department after completing her course.

In 2008 she began accompanying and deputising for UOW's musical theatre choir, which she later went to take on the leadership of in 2010. Flick aided in setting up the university's orchestra in 2009 (open to all instruments and players of any ability). The group played a repertoire of popular music across a number of genres including musical theatre, television and film, and pop and rock through the ages, as well as several classical works. Flick also accompanied and deputised for The SONG (Sounds Of New Gospel) which was regularly hired for public performances and weddings. Her directorship also extended to a wide range of other ensembles including those performing barbershop, close part jazz, secular, sacred, classical and chamber music.

Outside of the university Flick has had an active role in amatuer drama and over the past decade has worked with a number of groups across Norfolk and Hampshire including the Facade Productions and Norwich and Norfolk's Threshold Theatre Group. Other musical direction roles have included working with Hampshire's County Children Choir, The Berry Youth Theatre and Ormiston Victory Academy.

Since 2000 Flick has had a strong passion for getting involved in community groups and has worked with the Girl Guides, local charities, churches, youth groups and music organisations. She raised over £1000 through fundraising events for local charity and community groups in 2012 alone.

Her passion for music, event management and community involvement are all owing to the decade she spent living in Costessey. This was particularly influenced by the Performing Arts Department at Costessey High School, St Helen's Church and the Costessey Guiding units. Felicity sees COSMIC as a way for her to put back something into this community.

Plans for the organisation:

Over the coming months COSMIC aims to offer Costessey a place to make popular music, gospel music, jazz and musical theatre. The first few projects will be aimed at adults (18+), with the under 18s having the opportunity to take part in performance classes over the summer. There is also an intent to facilitate local composers and songwriters as well as those who like to sing and play.

As the year unfolds COSMIC hopes to establish a range of concerts and performances, some of which are planned to be collaborative ventures with other local community organisations such as Facade Singers. As time goes on we will also be aiding in charity fundraising and awareness campaigns.
